Is your business at risk of losing you to burnout?

As a small or medium-sized business (SME) owner, do you feel you can’t switch off from your company? When was the last time you had a holiday? If you’re not careful, you could be heading towards burnout.

Time pressures and money concerns are often the reason for not taking time off. However, your inability to switch off may be impacting on your family life or health.

You might be a risk to your business

Stressed business man

Stop. More than a quarter (26 per cent) of small businesses in the UK would have to immediately close if a key person died or became critically ill. That’s according to research by Legal & General into the business protection market. A further 26 per cent of companies said they would cease trading within a year in these circumstances.

Legal & General’s State of Nation’s SMEs survey recently found that 15 per cent of businesses which had lost a pivotal person had shut their doors. A key-person is someone whose illness or death would directly cause a financial issue for a business. An issue such as a fall in revenue, loss of clients or even a loss of efficiencies.

Across the more than 700 small companies surveyed, losing a key person was ranked as the number one concern. Those that had lost a key-person through death or critical illness said the tragedy had a huge impact on profits. Almost one in five (19 per cent) said it had lost them the confidence of their customers.
