We all ensure that when we’re in a car, we drive in a safe manner. In particular, we make sure we are not a hazard to others on the road. As fleet managers, the pressure and responsibility to ensure good driver behaviour and safe driving is a little more intense.
Recently published figures reveal in 2017, 1,544 people were killed on England’s roads – the most since 2011. The number of people killed and seriously injured stood at 23,825, which is way above the 2010-2014 average of 21,283.
Yet in Scotland the figures are falling. By the way, the numbers in Wales have hovered around the same level since 2014. In addition, these figures were half of what they were in 2004.
These facts and figures were released by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). They believe the Government should take a lead from Scotland and Wales and adopt road safety targets across England to push down the number of deaths and casualties,
RoSPA believes that setting challenging targets is an excellent way of improving road safety. It is now calling on England to do the same as part of a response to a Westminster Transport Committee inquiry on road safety.
RoSPA would also like to see a number of other interventions considered, including a reduction in the drink-drive limit in Wales and England, to match the current law in Scotland. Enabling active travel through improving safety for vulnerable road users is also key.
